LYA Overview

LYA’s Auctions Practice began in the mid-1990’s. It covers a range of activities from the development of bidding strategy and item valuations to auction platforms and auction management tools to conducting the sale of high value items on behalf of clients.

LYA’s expertise is at the forefront of auction formats including Simultaneous Multiple Round Ascending (SMR) Auctions, Combinatorial Clock Auctions (CCA) and the Clock Auction format.

LYA Founders

Johanne Lemay, B.A.Sc., MBA

Johanne Lemay is Co-President of LYA. She is a recognized expert in auctions and in spectrum related matters such as spectrum valuation and licensing.

Ms. Lemay is actively involved in consultations related to auction formats and rules. She has acted as an expert witness in regulatory proceedings on numerous occasions.

Ms. Lemay’s international experience includes leading mandates on spectrum licensing and auctions as well as investment due diligence in Europe, Latin America, Asia, the US and Canada.

Ms. Lemay is co-leader of the development of the LYA Auction Platforms. She brings expertise in all types of auction formats from SMRA to Clock auctions including Combinatorial Clock Auctions (CCA) and the clock format of the US Incentive Auction. Ms. Lemay has conducted spectrum license sales on behalf of clients. Ms. Lemay also delivers strategy seminars and auction workshops to both private and public clients in Europe, Canada and the US.

Ms. Lemay holds an Engineering Physics Degree from Laval University (Quebec City) and an MBA from Concordia University (Montreal).

Robert K. Yates, B.A.Sc., M.Eng., MBA.

Mr. Yates is Co-President of LYA and has over 30 years of experience in the telecom industry. Mr. Yates is an expert in auctions and valuation.

Mr. Yates has developed and assessed auction formats and rules on numerous occasions,  developed auction strategy and bidding tactics including game analysis  well as valued items for sale. Mr. Yates has provided bid room support and analyses for clients in a number of clock and SMRA auctions.

Mr. Yates is co-leader of the development of the LYA Auction Platforms. Mr. Yates holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (1979) and a Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering – Management Science/Operations Research (1983), both from the University of Toronto. He completed Concordia University’s Executive MBA Program in Montreal in 1992 and has a Certificate of Competency in French from McGill University. Prior to embarking on a career as a consultant, Mr. Yates spent 10 years with Bell Canada and Nortel Networks in engineering, product management and marketing roles.

Expert Auction Advisor

Adrian Vetta, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D (Economics and Mathematics)

Adrian Vetta graduated from the London School of Economics with a B.Sc in Economics and an M.Sc. in Mathematics. He obtained a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2002. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at McGill University with a joint position in the School of Computer Science and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. His research concerns computation in optimization and decision making, with a specific focus on applications in game theory and economics, networks and telecommunications, and bioinformatics.

Dr. Vetta has been collaborating with LYA since 2012. Dr. Vetta’s activities at LYA include auction platform design and rules, as well as auction bidding strategies & tactics.
