Start a new decade on the right footing with LYA's 2010 Canadian Communications Executive Boot Camp |
January 18 2010 - Start the year off on a solid footing with our Executive Boot Camp on the Canadian communications industry. 2009 went out with a bang with the decision of the Minister of Industry permitting Wind Mobile to launch, but where are things headed in 2010? Our boot camp will take you through the parameters of the overall market, key wireless and wireline technologies, current state of policies and regulations as well as spectrum awards and the broad strategic lines that should be shaping your thinking and investment strategies going forward.
Mobile and broadband reshaped the telecom world of the last ten years. Will digital television lead the next industry transformation in Canada as it is in the US with TV-everywhere initiatives and googleian plans to manage the content revolution? Will Canada reap the rewards of its digital dividend as many European countries are planning? And which players will lead the charge?
Who would have thought that in just a few years Videotron would become the dominant provider of residential telephone service in many areas where it offers cable service?
Actually, we did! In early 2006, LYA published an independent market research report entitled “LYA Canadian Consumer Telecom & Cable TV Market Forecasts “ where we stated “LYA forecasts that cablecos could capture close to 43% market share over all residential lines over the next five (5) years”. Across the country, Shaw just reported that its Digital phone service is now available to 93% of its basic cable customers and that 40% have elected to subscribe to Shaw’s phone service. It does indeed appear that the LYA forecast is well on its way to become a reality with profound ramifications across different market segments. For example, will Videotron be inclined to encourage its wireless customer base to disconnect their wireline phone service or on the contrary, will they focus their efforts on keeping and increasing market share among the two services, thus maintaining high usage and penetration of wireline phones? Will the somewhat uniquely integrated nature of Canadian carriers impact how the wireless market evolves even with additional new entrants launching service over the coming months?
